About

Learn more about Jo and his work.

Jo Malano was born on June 29, 1995, in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg.
Before turning to art, he focused for many years on sports and playing handball. His creative career began around 2013. At that time, he transferred from the Institut national des sports (INS) to the Lycée des Arts et Métiers. There, he graduated in 2014 from the “division artistique, section audiovisuel.” It was there that he met many friends who shared his creative interests. This ignited his creative passion. From then on, he participated in numerous exhibitions as well as large-scale outdoor graffiti projects. His style defies easy categorization. That is why his biography includes both gallery exhibitions and outdoor graffiti projects. For example, the Exposition “Locals” au Centre d’Art Dominique Lang et Nei Liicht, Dudelange in 2016, the Exposition du printemps du CAL au Tramsschapp, Luxembourg in 2023, or the Exposition “FIoritura” dans la Galerie Schlassgoart, Esch-sur-Alzette in 2024. As well as live painting at the “Nuit de la Culture”, Esch-sur-Alzette in 2019 and “Graffiti am Park”, Hesperange in 2019, or the Exposition collective “Metzeschmelz” by CUEVA, Esch-sur-Alzette/Schifflange in 2022. His art is a blend of abstraction and figurative elements, always seeking a balance—whether between emotions or between elements and colors.

Jo Malano’s pieces, known for their distinct use of natural
motifs mixed with abstract elements, blend into vibrant interior
worlds. Across murals, paintings, and various media, Malano
unites contrasts into a cohesive whole. His technique, from fine,
filigree lines to broad, vivid strokes, paints him as both artisan
and creator, connecting him to a lineage of historical painters.
From blossoming walls reminiscent of the French Douanier to
wilder abstractions, Malano’s influences range widely; keen
observers might spot the influence of a famed 19th-century
Japanese woodcarver. His work, both deeply personal and
universally inviting, feels like an exotic garden open to all.
